CONTRIBUTION OF WOOD SCIENCE & WOOD INDUSTRIES TO THE ISSUES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Conference science & wood industries - ARBORA
Talence, France,
November, 20th & 21th 2008

Nowadays, all economic sectors are conscious of their responsibility in sustainable development. Wood Sciences, which support the forest wood chain through research and innovation, and are multidisciplinary by nature, should have a leadership in the contribution to the three main issues of sustainable development the wood industry has to face : economy, society, environment. The process industries dedicated to wood and other renewable resources will play an increasing role in economic sectors of major importance, such as building construction, energy and chemistry. Acting for sustainable development is therefore a challenge for these industries, and an issue for research and innovation. Reducing environmental impacts of production/consumption systems through industrial ecology, eco-design of processes and products, is one important input of sustainable development. Questions related to human health and comfort during the whole life cycle of the products (from ground to ground) should also be taken into account.

The aim of the conference is to analyze the situation of research and industries related to the production and processing of renewable resources, basically wood science, with respect to the issues of sustainable development, through examples of scientific and industrial innovations.

The expected presentations should address at least one of the following topics :
- Eco-design of processes, products, and services
- Green chemistry
- Industrial ecology
- Evaluation of impacts on economical issues
- Evaluation of impacts on environmental issues
- Evaluation of impacts on societal issues

Program available at the beginning of June.
